The Curtain Is The Painting

Two painters, Zeuxis and Parrhasios, argued over who was the better painter. So, to settle their disagreement, they decided to compete, each painting one illusionistic, realistic painting. Zeuxis painted a picture of grapes so accurately that birds flew down to peck at them. Zeuxis, sure he won, mockingly asked Parrhasios to remove the curtain hanging over his painting, allowing the world to see his inferior effort. Parrhasios laughed and said, "The curtain is the painting." Zeuxis had only fooled birds. Parrhasios had fooled a fellow artist.
